Note: I believe that sexism against women is not taken seriously enough anywhere in the world. However, given that the Arab world is where I’m from and is what I care most about, I will focus on sexism there.
Why is sexism not taken seriously?
All Hail Sexism! Glory to sexism. Glory to a husband who beats his wife because she won’t give him her entire salary to blow off on the Arab version of pot. Glory to a father who forces his daughter to marry at age 14 to a man three times her age. Glory to a brother for controlling his sister and Glory for the parents for encouraging his behavior. Glory to a mother who pressures her daughter to get married, just so that she has something to brag about when chit chatting with her other fellow pretentious friends. Glory to parents for taking their daughter to the nearest faux doctor (aka barber or butcher) to get her circumcised. Glory to them for watching her bleed till she passes out, and Glory to them for destroying any chance of her ever having an actual sex (or even normal) life. Glory to a man who takes his secretary as a second wife, and after realizing that his first wife would leave him, he divorces the secretary. Glory to a father who praises his son for having pre-marital sex while beating up his daughter for doing the same. Glory to policemen who do not take women seriously when they try to file reports of street sexual harassment. Glory to men who think it is their right to sexually harass a woman, both verbally and physically just because the woman is not covering her arms or is wearing jeans. Glory to the great person (man) who was the first to say the now very well propagated quote ‘A girl’s honor is like a match; it can only be put out one time.’ Glory to a society that created such a stigma about non-virginity (or lack of hymen presence, which is not synonymous with virginity) to the extent that women in such situations feel compelled to go to (beyond sketchy) opportunistic (male) doctors to get revirginization surgeries. Glory to a recently- married woman (clearly sexist against herself as well as against other women) who calls other non-married women past a certain age, spinsters (a beyond offensive word, for those who do not know) and blames them for their misfortune. Glory to a man who blames his wife for only having girls and not being able to conceive boys (Somehow, despite the fact that biologically, men are the ones who either pass their Y-chromosome to the woman’s egg or don’t, it is generally always blamed on the woman). Glory to a boy who dates a girl and fills her with promises of weddings, family and kids and then after he gets his way and sleeps with her, he leaves her because she is no longer pure enough for him. Glory to a man who marries 3 or four wives, claiming that is his God-given right to marry them (when it is not) and treats them like they are his sex slaves and personal servants. Glory to a man who convinces/forces his wife to leave her job and stay home, arguing that she is his wife and hence it is his right to prohibit her from leaving the house without his permission, therefore eradicating any possible professional potential the wife might have had. Glory to the supposedly religious clerics who spend most of their sermons condemning women for their appearance and non-piety and promising them eternal condemnation in hell (in their opinion that is) instead of focusing on gender-neutral morality and ethics. Glory to a society that has mastered sexism against women to the extent that people do not even notice it anymore.
