Elections went well in Mauritania - and could stand to be a model for other places. For the most part, everything went smoothly according to international monitors.

Women took almost 20% of the seats in the National Assembly and nearly 30% of municipal seats.

However, there has been tension between independent candidacies and those for political parties.

Here are the official published results for the National Assembly:

RFD............16
PRDR...........7
PUDS...........1
RNLDE...........1
APP............6
UFP............9
UDP...........3
HATEM..........3
FP.............1
RDU...........3
RD............2
UCD...........1
Alternative..........1

Among political parties, the CFCD coalition won a total of 41 seats (including 3 seats won by Centrist Reformers who ran as independent candidates), while the PRDR managed to win only 7 seats. Other parties that do not belong to coalitions obtained 9 seats. The remaining 38 seats went to independent lists (excluding the Centrist Reformers).
