Building Bridges Part 1
8 February, 2008 - 22:37
In a multi-ethnic town in Bosnia, women’s rights activists from traditionally antagonistic communities worked together on one issue where they could all agree. Working to force the passage of a law requiring employers to give women paid maternity leave, the women brought together NGOs and political leaders. They were successful both in winning their fight for paid maternity leave, but also in bridging ethnic and religious divisions. This coalition demonstrates not only the effectiveness of local political activists, but how conflicting groups can be brought together while strengthening democratic processes.

Farsi Guide to Equality in the Family in the Maghreb (Women's Learning Partnership)
31 December, 2007 - 15:58
Farsi Guide to Equality in the Family in the Maghreb (Women's Learning Partnership)
In November, WLP published the Persian edition of the Guide to Equality in the Family in the Maghreb for use by Iranian women's rights activists in the "One Million Signatures" campaign for equal legal rights and family law reform. The campaign, launched in August 2006, aims to collect one million signatures and spread grassroots awareness of discriminatory laws such as those related to marriage, divorce, and child custody.
The arguments for family law reform presented in the Guide will help provide support to the legal reform efforts of the "One Million Signatures" campaign. The Guide is a unique advocacy tool developed by Collectif 95 Maghreb-Egalité, a coalition of women's organizations from Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia, that presents the current state of the family law in the Maghreb, and proposes religious, human rights, sociological, and legal arguments for reform, well-supported by relevant data.

The Conference will shed light on the role of civil society and efforts made to create better conditions for future generations.
The Conference will address the following themes: are there limits to freedom of expression? (protecting individuals and protecting religious beliefs); the relation between democracy and freedom of press (complete freedom, bounded freedom and what is the scope of these limits?); citizenship rights, and community rights of minorities, disadvantaged and vulnerable groups within society; and development of media techniques, civil society participation, and democratic practices.

Rising Voices (Video)
29 January, 2008 - 22:36
Women of the Middle East and North Africa working for change: Meet the women who are changing the face of politics across the Middle East and North Africa. In the last decade, they have more than doubled their numbers elected to national parliaments and continue to enter the political arena in larger numbers than ever before. Connected by a common language, culture, religion and determination to succeed, women from the region are joining forces to share their experiences, learn new skills and network for change. In September 2005, the Kuwait Economic Society Women’s committee and Kuwait Women’s Social and Cultural Society brought together more than 75 women leaders from Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Mauritania, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, West Bank/Gaza and Yemen. For four days, these elected members of parliament, cabinet members, political party leaders, civil society activists and journalists shared experiences, built skills to run successful political campaigns and sought to strengthen the regional network of women who will succeed in politics. The gathering took place against the backdrop of upcoming elections throughout the region, including Iraq, Jordan, Algeria, Bahrain, Yemen, the West Bank/Gaza and Kuwait, where women had won the right to vote and stand for office only a few months before. With interviews provided by women involved in the gathering and from across the region, Voices Rising recounts in their own words their motivation, inspiration and vision for the future.
Women’s Rights in the New Constitution of Iraq: Perspectives from the Afghan Constitutional Experience
31 January, 2008 - 17:51
This handbook argues that socioeconomic development in Iraq cannot move forward if the legal framework does not support equality before the law for all citizens. Afghanistan’s experience shows that catalysts for reform of women’s rights resulting from foreign intervention were short-lived. Therefore, the author argues for the need to support a homegrown effort to defend gender equality in the Iraqi constitution.
